I am very pleased to announce that the Ryerson team of Aviva Gomes-Bhatt and Benn Bland (4th year History BA) won the 6th annual Canadian International Council (CIC) – Hart House student debates this evening, defeating the team from the University of Toronto.
The Ryerson team won both the vote of the House (the audience in attendance) and the distinguished judges (one from Ryerson, one from U of T, and one independent), opposing the resolution that the United Nations should be abolished. In a very engaging and hard fought debate, Aviva and Benn were simply awesome: doing Ryerson very proud. Indeed, many people, including the guest of honour, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Elizabeth Dowdeswell, made a point of telling me how impressed they were with the Ryerson team. Aviva and Benn will bring home the CIC cup, which will be with the Department of History until next year’s showdown.
Thanks to all the students who showed up to cheer on the side, and to Dr. David MacKenzie for agreeing to sit as Ryerson’s representative on the panel of judges.
I’m sure you will join me in congratulating Aviva and Benn on such a great job. Well done!
